Published by O'Reilly Media (http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596522698/)

In this truly unique technical book, today's leading software architects present valuable principles on key development issues that go way beyond technology. More than four dozen architects including Neal Ford, Michael Nygard, and Bill de hOra offer advice for communicating with stakeholders, eliminating complexity, empowering developers, and many more practical lessons they've learned from years of experience. Among the 97 principles in this book, you'll find useful advice such as:

* Don't Put Your Resume Ahead of the Requirements (Nitin Borwankar)

* Chances Are, Your Biggest Problem Isn't Technical (Mark Ramm)

* Communication Is King; Clarity and Leadership, Its Humble Servants (Mark Richards)

* Simplicity Before Generality, Use Before Reuse (Kevlin Henney)

* For the End User, the Interface Is the System (Vinayak Hegde)

* It's Never Too Early to Think About Performance (Rebecca Parsons)

To be successful as a software architect, you need to master both business and technology. This book tells you what top software architects think is important and how they approach a project. If you want to enhance your career, 97 Things Every Software Architect Should Know is essential reading.

5/5 stars

Great software architecture advice, well-suited for iPhone reading

Disclosure: O'Reilly gave me a review copy for free. Before they did that though, before I knew there was going to be an iPhone version, before it was published, I already had this book on my wish list, since I'd checked in on the website where this book was being written. Now I've read the iPhone version, and my verdict is: I would spend $5 for this, both for the quality of the advice and the good fit between this content and reading on the iPhone.

With 97 brief essays, each one really gets a single point across clearly and CONCISELY. This works very well for an iPhone read - read one or two 'things' in line at the grocery store, then think about it while loading the car and driving home, then read another two or three later on, etc. (The ebook implementation itself is rock-solid, 5 stars.)

The ideas themselves are a collection of good things to think about to understand the practice of software architecture. The book does not present itself as "the ONLY things you need to know" and it's not. But whether you are an architect 'sharpening the saw' (like I am), or wanting to become an architect, or just to see a bit of how architects look at software, these are useful things to know. $5 for this sort of information in a convenient package for a whole lot of tasty mental snacking is a pretty good price!
